As we all know, grinding wheels will wear out during long-term use. This will not only affect its use effect, but in severe cases, it cannot be used directly. So what are the causes of grinding wheel wear?

1. Wear

When the abrasive wear is serious, after the grinding top surface has an obvious wear plane, the surface of the grinding wheel is flat. At this time, the total area of cutting edge wear increases, friction intensifies, and the cutting edge cannot enter the workpiece surface. However, the hardness of the grinding wheel is very high, so the abrasive grains cannot be broken and detached in time. This kind of wear usually occurs when the grinding hardness is low, the grinding wheel hardness is high, the abrasive grain size is too fine, and the tensile strength of the workpiece material is high.

2. Oxidation wear

Common abrasives include oxides, carbides, and nitrides. Oxide abrasives are stable in the air, and the surfaces of other abrasives are oxidized at high temperatures and gradually consumed.

3. Plastic wear

Under the action of high grinding temperature, the abrasive particles will wear due to plastic deformation. Plastic wear mainly depends on the thermal hardness of the workpiece material. During grinding, if the thermal hardness of the debris on the grinding wheel on the front blade surface is greater than the thermal hardness of the grinding contact area, the abrasive particles will show plastic wear.

4. Diffusion wear

It refers to the wear caused by the mutual diffusion of elements of the diamond grinding wheel and the weakening of the grinding stone surface when the grinding stone and the grinding stone are in contact at high temperature. The mutual diffusion of elements between the two materials is closely related to the chemical composition of the materials. The solubility of the carbon element of the diamond abrasive in iron is greater than the solubility of the elements of the nitride abrasive in iron, so the diamond grinding wheel cannot grind steel.

5. Thermal stress damage

During the grinding process, the working surface of the abrasive rises to a high temperature instantly, and the grinding wheel is rapidly cooled under the action of the grinding fluid. The frequency of its hot and cold cycles is equal to the rotation speed of the four wheels. Therefore, a large alternating thermal stress is formed on the surface of the abrasive, and cracks on the surface of the abrasive break.
